Parents are to be asked if smacking children should be banned,

Children's minister Beverley Hughes announced this week.

Under current laws, parents face jail if they hit a child so hard it

leaves a mark or a bruise - but under the law, which came into force in

January 2005, 'mild punishment' is allowed.
