Madeleine Moon MP Calls for Renewed Commitment on Biodiversity.
15/06/06
Madeleine Moon MP for Bridgend has pressed
the issue of Biodiversity through a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament this week.
As part of her on-going campaign to keep Biodiversity
a priority issue for Government, following on from her recent EDMs on Biodiversity (1647) and The State of British Moths (1999),
Mrs Moon has urged the importance of meeting the Government target of halting biodiversity loss by 2010 throughout the UK.
Mrs Moon stressed the importance of policy
integration and the adoption of common standards throughout the UK
in meeting these targets;
“Local, regional and national Government
must all demonstrate how they meet Biodiversity targets.
“Targets need to be integrated for the
purposes of recording, monitoring, mapping and tracking habitat species loss and the growth of invasive species at all levels.
“I would also urge that butterflies
are recognised as indicators of both a healthy environment and the effectiveness of Government land use policies.
Mrs Moon asked that Government look at increasing
financial resources to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan but did however stress that clear commitments have already been given
and that she, along with biodiversity and wildlife groups do recognise how much the Government has done.
