ZooBiotic
Ltd based in the Bridgend Constituency of Madeleine Moon Mp uses sterile maggots as a treatment to clean and clear infected
wounds and ulcers.
Having
visited Dr Tim Coombs; Chief Executive of ZooBiotic Madeleine learnt that the use of maggots has been known for centuries
before their application dried out with the arrival of antibiotics, specifically penicillin.
However
with the resistance to these drugs increasing the discovery that clinical trials have shown that maggots can clean wounds
in a fraction of the time taken by conventional treatments is important.
The
revival of this age old form of treatment may have huge implications in the battle against MRSA as well as helping to save
the NHS millions of pounds each year.
Madeleine
Moon MP said; “I was impressed at the effectiveness of this technique and am proud that a product as beneficial to so
many as this is being produced within Bridgend.”
Madeleine
immediately committed herself to ensuring this technique is once again reintroduced.
Madeleine
is submitting an Early Day Motion in Parliament in an effort to raise further awareness of this method of treatment, and has
secured an adjournment debate on Wednesday 28th February to be able to debate this issue in the House of Commons
and call upon the Department for Health to investigate the possible implications further.
